Artist Statement

Where does the intangible liminal space between the human mind and programmable technology exist? How does it permeate into contemporary society and become a tangible and readable space? Using clouds and water as a language I explore these questions and transfigure them into material works that seek to challenge how the viewer perceives the infinity of the ‘in-between’. The concept of the ‘in-between’ has qualities of the ‘Uncanny’ (as discussed by Royle and Freud) and many of these principles (repetition/ the double, the unknown, technology, intellectual uncertainty, and liminality) are interrogated within the works. The reflective qualities of water create the double of the sky seamlessly, hence a mirror to the in between.

I am a mixed media artist, using digital painting I create my clouds – temporally fleeting phenomena – using technology and creating a synastry between clouds and contemporary technologies. In juxtaposition my sculptural works are primarily made of led, bronze and 3D printed plastic which have a sensation of weight. It is a considered choice to mechanically print particular digital cloud paintings and deliver them to a place of physical existence, expanding away from the ethereality of programmable 0’s and 1’s. So, where does it all exist?
